Trailblazing Territorian
Sisters of Science
Have you ever opened your science textbook and thought, where are all the women?
We know that we have a vibrant community of female scientists, technicians, engineers, and entrepreneurs in the Territory, yet their stories aren’t always visible.
A disturbing, but not surprising study published last year Invisible women: Gender representation in high school science courses across Australia found a clear gender bias in Australian Science curriculums with only one unique mention of a female scientist.
We want to hear about Dr Ella Stack, a GP that became the first female Mayor of any major Australian City in 1975 - Darwin, and helped to rebuild the city after Cyclone Tracy. From running a makeshift disaster clinic, to codifying building standards, and pioneering health research she really helped make the NT what it is today.
We want to hear about Molly Wardaguga, the trailblazing midwife, researcher and leader that practised her craft in both western and traditional methods. She championed the ‘birthing on country’ movement directly improving birth outcomes for Territory families.
We want to hear about Olive Pink, the eccentric anthropologist in Alice Springs, who campaigned doggedly for Indigenous rights before retiring to her extraordinary arid garden, which later became the Alice Springs Botanical Gardens.
We are going to make a book just for our ladies. An anthology of the sisters of science.
We want to hear about your favourite trailblazing Territorian woman of the past or present. Please email your nomination along with a few sentences about the nominee and their pioneering work and any links.
